August break days 1-4

I'm participating in the August Break challenge set up by Susannah Conway for this month. I plan to post every few days with my photos, as I'd like to continue with some of my planned posts for this month!

This challenge is an exercise in dropping perfectionism - I'm hoping to outrun my perfectionist tendency!

You can join the challenge at any time! It's fun to look for photo opportunities that fit the prompts!

  1. What a great challenge! It reminds me of the daily challenges set up by WordPress, except perhaps more consistent.

I usually force myself to 'reserve' my photography for both my woodwork and my walks but I like the more 'freefom', expressive approach that this challenge invites.

Plus, you've got the camera for it as well! ;-) I need to find a method of removing two parallel scratches from the outer lens of mine and it's only a year old this month. :-(

  2. Thank you Olly!
Yes, I don't tend to take photos spontaneously, I take them instead on walks and of things that I've made. I'm realising that it's actually a lot of fun seeking out the prompts when I'm going about my day. Each day has a different prompt, and for me, it's easier to take pictures of 3-4 prompts at once, as I don't have photo opportunities every day.

oh, that doesn't sound good. Does it affect the picture quality? I bought a lens protector for my camera, which I can replace for 10 quid if damaged, instead of buying a new lens for 140!

  3. I'm glad that you're also enjoying this challenge as you participate.

Yes, I basically have two parallel scratches near the centre, which relates to being just above the centre in a photo or video. If a light source is anywhere near then it causes an irritating 'glare'. You may not notice it but it sticks out at me as I'm familiar with what my camera used to be like. I usually switch the camera off and retract the lens regularly but I dropped it in a pile of dry dirt while out walking a few months ago and it's been like this since.

Apparently, rubbing alcohol can help. I'm not sure how easy or practical it would be to replace part on a compact but I'd certainly invest in protection if I had a better camera like yours. Looking at some of my photos from a year ago when it was new, it does look as though there has been a general deterioration in the image quality, which is something I've read about with compacts...

  4. Aw shucks that's not good. do you have a strap on the camera, like a wrist strap? I am fiercely protective of mine, I actually dreamt that I'd dropped it, scratched the lens and also found it soaking wet and mouldy inside! not a good dream!

Yeah, replacing parts may not be practical on a compact. Oh, I didn't know they deteriorated. are there any reasons for that? Hope you get the lens sorted!

  5. It does indeed come with a wrist strap and I use it religiously for the same fears as your own. But that never seemed to stop my previous compact from hitting the concrete floor in the workshop several times... My current Nikon received its scratches while I was out on an unexpectedly fast-paced evening walk (6 miles in 90 minutes?! And people try to tell me the 3 Booters don't walk that fast!).

I don't see a need to purchase anything big in my life. I'm saving little bits at a time for the future. I treated myself to a smart phone with my bonus last Christmas... Perhaps this year, I'll put that towards a DSLR! ;-)
